Flip-flops may seem like a harmless summer accessory, but emerging studies are showing that they are bad for human orthopaedics as well as the environment. In this feature article we hear from an African conservation group, called Ocean Sole, which claims that discarded flip-flops are killing marine life.
Ninety tons of the popular footwear are washing up on the East African coast, mostly coming from Asia, India, China, and parts of Kenya, Erin Smith of Kenyan recycling collective Ocean Sole told CNN.
Erin said that in addition to cluttering beaches, the non-biodegradable shoes are killing ocean life.
